Diversity prevails in every nook and corner of Punjab!

Punjab has historically been one of regions in the sub-continent that was most tolerant of diversity and supportive of plurality till recent times. It is here that we first encounter the phenomenon of ethnic, religious, social and cultural diversity clearly testified by ancient literature — religious and secular. Source: DAWN. The province of Punjab is a kaleidoscope of different religions and cultures. It represents all major religious traditions of the East – Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism. Muslim Shrines, Sikh Gurdwaras, Buddhist Stupas and Hindu Temples are scattered across Punjab from north to south. For the millions of Sikhs around the world, the holiest sites such as Nankana Sahib – the birthplace of Guru Nanak. Likewise, for Buddhists, the Gandhara civilization scattered around Taxila and its environs has a very special religious significance. A noteworthy characteristic of Islam is the significance of shrine used for the mausoleums of Sufis. Sufism is a major part of Islam, and Sufis have been particularly important in the spread of Islam….”

 

Their shrines have turn out to be the place of different customs, rituals and prayers, performed by followers.  Shrines of the Sufis therefore become mystical hubs where people pay tributes on their birth and death anniversaries annually.
