PUNJAB's LOST CIVILIZATIONS

“Among the heritage of Pakistan there are hundreds if not thousands of archaeological and historical sites and monuments representative of the bygone days starting from pre-historic period to the present day.  The history goes as far back as the human information goes. This includes the archaeological sites of Indus Valley Civilizations such as Mohenjo-Daro in Sindh, Harappa in Punjab and Merhgarh in Baluchistan. The Indus Valley Civilization was followed by the ‘Gandhara Civilization. Gandhara is the region that now comprise of Peshawar valley, Mardan, Swat, Dir, Malakand, and Bajuaur agencies in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Taxila in the Punjab, and up to Jalalabad in Afghanistan. It is in this region that the Gandhara civilization emerged and became the cradle of Buddhism. It was from here that Buddhism spread towards east as far away as Japan and Korea.”

Indus Valley Civilization or Harappan civilization

The land of the Pakistan has witnessed as the cradle of an ancient society of the ancient world, called Indus Valley Civilization or Harappan Civilization. This prodigious civilization is contemporary to the other ancient societies like Egyptian, Persian, Mesopotamian, and Chinese. The Harappa, Mohenjo-Daro, Ganweriwal, Kot Diji, and Mehargarh are its renowned archaeological sites, which illustrate the ancient agriculture and social lives of the Indus people. This civilization is also significantly known with its urbanization, town planning, bronze technology, seals, and trade networks. In Pakistan, earliest farming was started in the Neolithic at Mehargarh site (7000 B.C. to 2500 B.C.). In later stages, it progressed towards the Harappan. Research work ARCHAEOLOGICAL ACUMENS).

Soan is one of Punjab’s important stream of the Potohar region and historically has been the centre of pre-historic Soanian culture. The earliest signs of humans have been discovered during the excavations of prehistoric mounds. It is here where 500,000 year old relics of the Stone Age man have been found traced back to the Paleolithic period. the oldest stone tools have been reported in Morgah, Sohan and on the banks of River Soan. The Stone Age men of Soan Valley have been found to organise themselves in a homogeneous society and developed a culture called the Soan Culture. Source: DAWN March 31, 2012

Mohra Muradu-TAXILA

Jaulian, along with the nearby monastery at Mohra Muradu, form part of the Ruins of Taxila – a collection of excavations that were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.

Gandhara region, the hallowed centre of Buddhism, had once been the cradle of the world famous Gandhara art, culture and knowledge. The archaeological remains found in Taxila, Peshawar, Charsadda, Shahbaz Garhi, Jamal Garhi, Takht Bahi, Swat and rock carvings along the ancient Silk Road (KKH) have well recorded the history of Gandhara. Taxila attracted the attention of the great conqueror, Alexander in 327 B.C., when it was a province of the powerful Achaemenian Empire. It later came under the Maurian dynasty and reached a remarkable matured level of development under the Ashoka. Then appeared the Indo-Greek descendants of Alexander”s warriors and finally came the most creative period of Gandhara. The Kushan dynasty was established in about 50 AD. During the next 200 years, Taxila, Peshawar and Swat became a renowned centre of learning philosophy, art and trade.
